Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region - BoR Member

The Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region is located in the middle of Western Europe, in the southwest of Germany and it is situated at the intersection of the three federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse with a surface area of 5,600 km²

The gross domestic product as a measure of economic performance is over 78 billion euros (2011) in the region, slightly higher than that of EU member state Slovakia for example.

In terms of export, Rhine-Neckar traditionally ranks among the top regions and with around 57% is significantly above the national average in the relevant manufacturing industry.

Thanks to its economic power, the Rhine-Neckar region is one of the areas with low unemployment, there are 134,000 companies registered in the region. Our region is also home to many successful renowned research institutions, universities like the Heidelberg University with its 625-year-tradition and cultural institutions as well as cities and communities that are worth living in. These regional players cooperate closely and form an alliance of strong partners.

One aim of the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region is to further develop the region economically, socially and environmentally, working in close cooperation with partners and the other regional organizations to become a pioneer of energy efficiency and renewable energy within Europe by 2020.

Since 2012 there is a Regional SEAP (Sustainable Energy Action Plan) which is called “Regionales Energiekonzept Rhein-Neckar” in the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region established. 75 projects are defined as drafts in this regional SEAP. The operationalization is coordinated by working groups e.g. “climate friendly communities”; “energy round table meetings”, “sustainable mobility”. Also a monitoring of this progress is being established. For more information, you can take a look on the German website.

In April 2014 the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on climate protection with the Rhine-Neckar County, which itself has signed a MoC with its communities to ensure effective cooperation in implementing the SEAPs at different levels. To work hand in hand, avoid duplication and using synergy effects, this innovative approach of MLG creates a win-win situation for all participants.
