Getting to the heart of the action in Malmo and Lund for CITyFiED’s 3rd project meeting

Project partners from across Europe came together this 30 September - 2 October 2015 as technical expertise in the deliverables, works on the demo sites and replication modelling for cities comes to life

Consortium partners have been accelerating towards the tipping point of the project - and with a number of technical deliverables now submitted or being finalised, the products, knowledge and on-site works are beginning to take shape.

These include a range deliverables on technologies and methodologies for city retrofitting, business case definition, city clustering and replication potential assessment and technical implementation definition for the project demonstration sites in Sweden, Spain and Turkey. Interim deliverables have also been submitted on the topics of financial data, business case definition and regulatory and policy influences on business models.

This work plays a vital role in shaping the achievements of the intervention sites; but will also be at the heart of the knowledge and insight due to be shared with project’s City Cluster of 11 replication districts, Community of Interest and beyond.

Project coordinator CARTIF, gave an updated analysis and provisions of recent months work, including a new assessment of CITyFiED’s BEST table provisions for energy performance, renewable energy sources and total energy use. With demo sites spread across a variety of climates and starting points numerous cities across Europe should be able to take note of the expected targets and the techniques used to achieve them. Soma, Turkey is expecting 49% energy savings; Lund, Sweden, the integration of 70% RES contribution; and Laguna de Duero nearly 60% renewables and over 35% total energy savings.

With the framework and tools for successful deep renovation and smart city development coming together, the meeting focus was able to be operational and tactical. Concerning the intervention areas, this meant assuring quality control, supervision, commissioning and test procedures were all in check. In the domain of exploitation and business, Steinbeis Europe used an interactive session to help clarify intellectual property issues and descriptions of exploitable results. This was explored in an extensive session encouraging partners to work on their value proposition, establish key partners and define customer segments.

A technical visit to Örtoftaverket, Kraftringen’s biomass-fired combined heat and power plant was organized by Kraftringen Energi AB. Örtoftaverket is a biomass-fired combined heating and power (CHP) plant that produces both heating and electricity. The boiler is fired with forest residue, recycled wood and peat, mostly coming from waste from the pulp and forest industries: tree tops, branches and other forest waste left after harvesting. Here it is used to produce sustainable district heating and electricity.

Meanwhile, with the ingredients now beginning to come together, the CITyFiED methodology sessions felt and sounded more substantial. The objective is to facilitate the decision process for the renovation of districts as a whole at all stages – from a diagnosis at city and district level, to execution, commissioning and impact assessment. The methodology will be anchored in the direct experiences of the demonstration sites as well as drawing on a range of strategic city initiatives and is intended to be a powerful tool for the architects of tomorrow’s smart cities. Let the work continue!
