The Torrelago demo site district retrofitting interventions will be implemented in two phases, each one involving the following numbers of buildings and dwellings, which were constructed around 1980:
- Phase 1: 12 buildings of 12 floors, with 4 apartments per floor, for a total of 576 dwellings of average area of 100 m2.
- Phase 2: 19 buildings of 12 floors, with 4 apartments per floor, for a total of 912 dwellings of average area of 100 m2.
New energy in the local economy
It is clear that investing to improve energy efficiency has profound environmental impacts. The CITyFiED demonstration site in Laguna de Duero is also going some way to showing the economic and societal benefits as well - with 50 unemployed Laguna residents due to receive training and work on the renovation implementation of the building façades.
More than 400 resumes reached CITyFiED partner 3IA, the company responsible for placing the new Torrelago building façades, with 50 positions made open in the company. Previously unemployed residents have been prioritized in the recruitment and new hires will receive an extensive training program, lasting around two weeks, to ensure high quality delivery of tasks on the facades and prepare a talent base for future implementations in the project.
And on the subject of energy, another CITyFiED partner, Dalkia has been busy installing three new biomass boilers at the demonstration site. Works have included the construction of an underground boiler room, installation of the boiler tanks, a smart metering system and the implementation of various substations.

Sharing a vision for success – co-creating the future
In a truly cooperative approach, CITyFiED representatives carried out a workshop with the residents about the visualization part of the district's renovation. Residents from Torrelago district (Laguna de Duero-Spain) and CITyFiED representatives met on 19 November 2014 to define and agree on the development objectives for the visualization part of the district’s renovation which will be applied and demonstrated as part of our project.
Implementing a truly cooperative approach, CITyFiED partner Mondragon led the workshop, which brought together Fundación CARTIF, Dalkia and some 11 residents of the district. Participants had the opportunity to address various technological and non-technological solutions designed to cut energy consumption and the effects these could have on residents. The approach seeks to take account of user perspectives, and places residents at the heart of the decision-making process. For long-term success in green energy, projects like CITyFiED need residents to fully buy into the retrofitting and development that is planned. Such an approach raises awareness of energy challenges and increases the prospect of replicability through citizen engagement.
During the workshop, partners were able to capture the needs of residents, and look into how to deliver the right solutions for them while remaining true to the broader aims of the Smart Cities and Communities Initiative. The workshop results will help define the ICT platform, thus enhancing the CITyFiED’s monitoring and visualisation tasks that lay ahead. Although the workshop specifically related to the Spanish demonstration site its outcome will be shared with the other sites and its methodology applied by them.
