Naples is the capital of the Campania region and of the same province; with 989,111 inhabitants (more than a sixth of the entire regional population) is the third largest Italian city and the first of southern Italy and has a territorial extension of 117.27 km2
The metropolitan area of Naples has about 4 million inhabitants, one of the most densely populated in Europe, and has a population density of 2,632 inhab/km2. The various foreign dominations, that have followed through the centuries, have characterized the history of Naples and influenced the culture of his people.
Founded in the 7th century by the Greeks, in the course of the centuries have followed the Romans, the Angevins, Aragonese, French and Bourbon, when Napoli became the capital of the Kingdom of the two Sicilies. In 1860 the city of Naples was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.
In 1995 the historic centre of Naples, the largest in Europe, has been recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site. In 2012 the city of Naples has joined the initiative promoted by the European Commission called the Covenant of mayors which involved local authorities committed to increase energy efficiency and use of renewable energy sources in their territory.
As a signatory, the Administration has prepared the SEAP (Sustainable Energy Action Plan), a programmatic document that contains a series of initiatives that the city will field for the achievement of the objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions of 25% by 2020. The SEAP contains many foreseen actions in areas such as climate control, public lighting offices and buildings, transport and mobility, renewable energy, green purchasing, participation and cooperation, urban planning, recycling and waste reduction.
