On 12th March Spanish partners held the CITyFiED final conference in Laguna de Duero (Spain). It was the occasion to present the final results and the CITyFiED legacy to public authorities and citizens. The European project CITyFiED has managed to reduce the energy demand and CO2 emissions of 5,000 residents of Laguna de Duero.

Reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions is not only about adopting new technologies, but also ensuring that the public adopt such technologies

Six months before the end of the project, the CITyFiED community can proudly rely on 59 cities, which consists of demo and cluster cities and those that are part of a community of interest: the regular and active cooperation and exchange among the cities were key elements for the success of the project.

The energy retrofitting works carried out in Torrelago district, in Laguna de Duero, have finished. A total of 31 buildings, formed by 1.488 dwellings, have benefited from this refurbishment, focused on reducing the energy demand and the CO2 emissions through innovation and the use of renewable sources of energy.

At the end of May the consortium came together in Lund, Sweden, to catch up on the latest developments, align on the status of the project and pinpoint future actions. 

CITyFiED is honoured to be recognised as a leading international example of “innovative and influential” work in urban transformation by a panel of global city leaders.

CITyFiED City members and consortium experts discovered energy efficiency’s ‘best kept secret’ Ludwigshafen and neighbouring Mannheim 30 November – 1 December 2017

On Saturday December 2, Kraftringen met tenants from the Linero housing area in the eastern part of Lund at the local supermarket to talk about energy efficiency and how to reduce energy consumption.

CITyFiED Methodology is an integrated approach divided into seven phases, ranging from initial citywide diagnosis to final evaluation of the renovation. It includes an indicators tool and guidelines to support decision-making process.

The projects’ streak of winning awards and gaining recognition from peers and professionals continued in Barcelona on 15 November 2017.

CITyFiED has developed a way to assess and select energy efficient measures for buildings to be included in existing or new district renovation strategies. The replication framework outlines energy costs and calculations plus interviews and workshops to identify barriers and earn buy-in.

With a strong dedication to supporting and funding applied MSc and PhD research, Mir Technology Holding has more than 100 commercialised patents and a unique production know how helping CITyFiED district heating solutions. 

The innovative approachs, technical know-how and leadership across the CITyFiED community gained significant international recognition at the Euroheat & Power and International District Energy Association (IDEA) Global District Energy Climate Awards in Qatar, 24 October 2017

European Mobility Week an opportunity to Influence mobility and urban transport issues, as well as improve public health and quality of life

A more confident approach to mass-market deployment and replicability of district-scale energy efficient retrofitting is gaining traction across Europe. 

During European Sustainable Energy Week (19-25 June), Veolia invited more than 50 children from Miguel Hernández Primary School to visit the new District Heating network serving part of the local community since 2015.

An early start to celebrating the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) ‘energy days’ began in Lund, Sweden, with an open invitation for politicians, municipal officials, researchers and more to discuss sustainable district renewal. 

Property owners, developers, contractors and consultants in the construction industry in Sweden, committed to sustainable building, collaborate and exchange knowledge through the Sweden Green Building Council (SGBC). SGBC visited CiTYFiED in Lund in April to study the renovation and energy efficiency measures implemented there.

How can existing buildings be developed to meet future challenges? 

Members of the consortium are delighted to have been retained as one of the 20 principal presentations and two written publications for III Congreso Ciudades Inteligentes" Smart City Conference in Madrid, April 26-27, 2017. 

SCEWC took place the 15– 17 November in Barcelona – and CITyFiED was pleased to be present and active on the SmartCity Valladolid y Palencia stand.

In the pursuit of a high performance ICT backbone, CITyFiED joined major industry and telecoms players and researchers at the DAREED ICT Solution for Smart Cities Workshop held in Seville 23 November 2016. 

Project consortium partner and key player at the Lund demonstration site, energy company Kraftringen, has been awarded at a prize ceremony in Paris, arranged by the European Centre of Employers and Enterprises, CEEP. 

A prestigious delegation of several Nordic and Northern European city and regional actors from the ERRIN smart cities, regions and communities working group visited CARTIF facilities this October. Their visit aimed to know more about CARTIF coordinated smart city projects and the mechanics of a large scale demo site in Torrelago. 

CITyFiED partner, Manisa Metropolitan Municipality is responsible for installing and developing district heating for not just the Soma pilot site, but also the whole town. The municipality possesses the highest capacity of brown coal minerals in Turkey and a power plant, which produces 2,09% of the whole country’s energy.

CITyFiED cluster city Florence, Community of Interest member Donostia San Sebastian and a third, member of the consortium, Tecnalia have come together in a new and high profile H2020 smart cities project, REPLICATE. 

Works update from the 140,000m2 site, with renovation and retrofitting set to achieve 38% energy savings and nearly 60% renewable energy solutions. 

In the search for low carbon solutions, a fellow Horizon 2020 project – ISOBIO – is going back to nature to give some age-old building materials a very modern twist. CITyFiED partner ACCIONA is a member of both projects and used a recent workshop on bio-based insulation to explore possible synergies. 

The consortium came together in Istanbul, Turkey late June 2016 to catch up on the latest developments, identify collective challenges and pinpoint future actions. 

The CESB16 Conference took place 22– 24 June in Prague, Czech Republic, organized under auspices of several prestigious international conveners including CIB, iiSBE, UNEP-SBCI and FIDIC. 

EuroPython was the first major Python programming language community conference ever organized by volunteers. It started 2002 in Charleroi, Belgium, which attracted over 200 attendees.

In Laguna de Duero, Valladolid, Europe’s largest retrofit site is a massive undertaking designed to deliver significant energy savings and substantial reductions in CO₂ emissions and improve comfort. 

During EU Sustainable Energy Week 2016 the My Smart City District (MSCD) cluster of 8 projects representing 25 cities across 13 countries came together to deliver five different online seminars in five days on key issues and challenges for smarter, greener towns, cities and districts.

CITyFiED demonstration site in Lund, Sweden continues citizen engagement initiatives with afternoon BBQ and discussions about energy savings and local energy production. The event featured as a European Union ‘Energy day’ on sustainable energy.

The fifth edition of the EeB PPP Project Review, published in March 2016, gives an overview of 110 co-funded projects within the Energy-efficient Buildings Public Private Partnership (EeB PPP) under the 7th Framework Programme (FP7) as well as 17 new co-funded projects under the Horizon 2020 programme

Significant improvements to energy efficiency often mean lengthy inconveniences to residents. In the Torrelago district of Valladolid, Spain, the CITyFiED project is embracing this and trying to engage with the community throughout the process

Municipalities, energy agencies and technical experts met in Udine, Italy to learn from one another face-to-face and channel the knowledge generated by the CITyFiED project. 

The process of renovating and rebuilding the district heating system at Linero in Lund is now underway. 

In Soma, buildings are heated by a lignite fuelled central heating system. Insulation of the current heating system pipes has become worn-out including water exposure at joints due to leakages. CITyFiED works are preparing an impressive upgrade

Replication potential is at the heart of the CITyFiED project and first in line for analysis and evaluation is the city cluster of ten cities and one region – with a further 38 member cities keenly monitoring their progress

In the Torrelago district, cumulative improvements of the deep renovation works conducted as part of the CITyFiED project are beginning to be seen and felt by partners and residents alike. 

Good communication and meaningful engagement with residents is key to ensuring support for retrofitting works at the Linero demonstration site of CITyFiED. 

The growing importance of cities as drivers of climate change is hard to miss. Today, much of the practical initiatives and momentum to reduce climate emissions lies now with cities, where much of our population, services and economic activity reside. But how can we make the most of a window of opportunity to become climate smart and highly energy efficient? 

At the end of last year, Koprivnica City Council unanimously adopted the proposal for establishing a revolving energy fund along with its strategic energy agency partner from January 2016.

In October, Félix Larrinaga from Mondragon delivered a presentation at the II Congreso Edificios Inteligentes (Smart Buildings Congress) in Madrid.

Seventeen students of the School of Industrial Engineering of the University of Valladolid, together with the responsible Professor, Dr. Ing. Antolín Lorenzana and Dr. Ing. Ali Dr. Ing. Vasallo, enhanced their Construction Engineering And Transport courses with a visit to the Spanish demo site on Thursday 3 December 2015.

Activities in the Torrelago district of Valladolid have generated plenty of interest from engineers and architects from across Spain and Europe

The dictionary definition of demonstrate is ‘to clearly show the existence or truth of something by giving proof or evidence’ – and the sites in Lund, Laguna de Duero and Soma are pushing hard to show other European partnerships how it is done.

Ensuring Europe’s cities can meet the substantial need for improved energy efficiency and reduced emissions requires a keen sense for knowledge-sharing and capacity building.  With a complementary technical skillset and combined network of nearly 70 cities, CITyFiED and CELSIUS are two projects taking the initiative.

Supported by the European Commission, the Smart Cities Information System (SCIS) is a continuation of the CONCERTO series of projects, started back in 2005. 

Deep energy retrofitting of districts is far from being a reality in many European cities despite the benefits for residents, the business opportunities for companies and the environmental improvements for municipalities. Non-technological barriers can restrain this type of city renovation. 

The European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) took place from 15-19 June and provided the backdrop for the MySmartCityDistrict initiative to hold a series of events dubbed OpenHouse from across four member projects - CITyFiED, R2CITIES, ZenN, and EU-GUGLE.

Continuing with the development of ICT solutions oriented to support residents on energy consumption reduction, a series of user tests were conducted on February, 27th to validate the visualization solutions proposed during the design phase

The start of 2015 has seen CITyFiED sign up to a group of fellow Smart City projects under the name MySmartCityDistrict (MSCD). Three other projects all aimed at moving us towards a sustainable urban future make up the group that was set up during the course of last year. These fellow projects are EU-GUGLE, R2CITIES, and ZenN.

In a truly cooperative approach, CITyFiED representatives carried out a workshop with the residents about the visualization part of the district's renovation.

As part of the CITyFiED project 11 cities have become what is known as the CITyFiED City Cluster 

A progress meeting maybe, but this was also the setting for a demonstration site visit and an exploitation workshop.

Lund is the location of one of three CITyFiED demonstration sites critical to the development of a replicable, systemic and integrated strategy to adapt European cities and urban ecosystems into the smart city of the future 

A project to demonstrate optimised energy systems for high performance energy cities has just commenced. CITyFiED is a 5-year endeavour co-funded by the EU and led by Valladolid-based Fundación CARTIF. The consortium comprises 18 partners from Spain, Sweden, Turkey, Belgium and Germany.
