Leicester

Leicester is situated in the center of the East Midlands region of England, and is the county town of Leicestershire

Leicester is the largest unitary authority in the region with an area of 73 square kilometers and houses a culturally diverse population of almost 330,000 citizens.

Leicester’s first Climate Change Programme of Action (CCPoA) was launched in September 2012 and outlined milestones to tackle climate change and reaffirm the city’s commitment to sustainability. The third installment of the CCPoA has recently been published setting out a 100 actions to take place across the city over the next year to reduce carbon emissions. The CCPoA has received a pledge of support by over 50 local organisations across the public, private and voluntary sectors.

White Light Energy Saving Scheme - Website 

The White Light Energy Saving Scheme involves updating the high and low pressure sodium street lighting stock to more energy efficient LED luminaires. The new street lights will be connected to a computer system which can monitor the street lights to look at performance, dimming levels, detection of faults and monitor energy usage. 

Intelligent Metering - Website 

Intelligent metering is used to detect the wasteful use of gas, electricity and water. This acts as a low cost solution for reducing energy usage.

City Council Carbon Road Map 

The City Council Road Map models the potential activity needed to reduce the City’s carbon emissions by 50% by 2025. The road map contains case studies as to how the Council have recently or are currently working to reduce carbon emissions.

Climate Change Adaptation Plan - Website 

Leicester’s Climate Change Adaptation Plan has been in operation since 2006 with a yearly update containing progress and further actions.  The plan contains actions to reduce the city’s vulnerability from climate change including Surface Water Management Plans and City-wide Drought Plans.

Leicester District Energy Scheme

Leicester’s District Energy Scheme was the largest to be installed in the UK in one phase with the installation of 7km of pipework. The scheme uses low carbon gas-fired combined heat and power with upgraded biomass boilers.
