Having witnessed 8,500 years of human history, İzmir had been founded at the side of a gulf, and currently is the third biggest city and second most important seaport of Turkey.

Situated at the west of Anatolian Peninsula, at the side of Aegean Sea, the province has an area of 12,012 km² with an approximate population of 4 million people. As one of the oldest port cities of the world, İzmir has always been recognised as an important meeting point for people with different cultures, languages and religions.

İzmir has the Aegean type Mediterranean climate in which summers are generally hot and arid and winters are temperate. You met with a fresh and open weather when you reach İzmir. Temperature averages are at 27.5 ºC during summer months and between 12 ºC - 14 ºC during winter months.

İzmir is the port of a wide hinterland spreading from Çanakkale to Fethiye. In addition to being an important foreign trade city of Turkey with its free zones, industrial zones and maritime transportation opportunities, İzmir also has significant qualified labour force and developed infrastructure. It is also a prominent tourism centre with its environment, historical assets, cultural heritage and natural beauties. Quality of the industrial goods produced in İzmir is at a level of meeting international standards. Agriculture-based industries are also considerably developed. Main products produced in the region are cotton, grape, fig, dried fruits, vegetables, spices, alcohol drinks, animal feed and tobacco. 

Located at the westernmost point of Turkey, İzmir combined its western culture developed through this location advantage and its outward-oriented structure with the Anatolian culture and traditions. It has integrated and strengthened its culture tourism with deep-rooted history and ancient civilisations; faith tourism with its hosting of different beliefs; thermal tourism with the geothermal resources and facilities; and eco-tourism with its nature, sea, sun, sand assets. İzmir is also a metropolis suitable for convention tourism with its high-standard facilities, and expositions and festivals held throughout the year.
