Budapest

Budapest is the capital and the largest city of Hungary. It is the country's principal political, cultural, commercial, industrial and transportation centre

The city covers an area of 525 square kilometres and in 2014 its population was 1 744 665 people.

Budapest consists of twenty-three districts. The Hungarian capital city has a peculiar dual self-government system. This means that in addition to the Budapest Municipality, which is the local government of Budapest, each of the twenty-three districts have their own government, the so-called district governments, with elected mayors and a body of representatives. The Budapest General Assembly is the representative body of Budapest. Its members are represented by the Mayor and three Deputy Mayors. The Budapest General Assembly sets up committees from its members to prepare decisions and to organize and check on their implementation.

The Municipality is provided with own assets, it is subsidized from the central government budget and is entitled to collect revenues on its own.

Often mentioned all around the world as the Pearl of the River Danube or the Capital of Spas, but its sparkling cultural life, musical traditions, architecture, theatres and festivals have also brought the name of this remarkable city. Not so many cities can take pride in having such historical fascinating monuments like remains of fortresses and buildings from Roman times, still functioning Turkish baths, the heritages of the Gothic and Baroque ages as well as superb Art Nouveau architecture.

This city is really endowed with a rich history and unique cultural heritage and all visitors are surely be captivated by its alluring atmosphere and unrivalled panoramas. At last, but not at least, it has the world's largest thermal water cave system, the second largest operating synagogue, and the third largest parliament building. The city attracts roughly about 5 million tourists a year. As one of the largest official organizations of Hungary the Municipality of Budapest is the beneficiary of several EU funded infrastructural development projects as well as partner of soft projects. As a member of the EUROCITIES Executive Committee and the Covenant of Mayors, the city of Budapest considers to reach the EU 2020’s goals, particularly its environmental aspects as a matter of high importance.

The Climate Program of the Capital which is currently under construction will correspond to the Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP) undertaken in the framework of the Covenant of Mayors. International exchange of knowledge, the involvement of public service companies, civil NGOs, universities in research and demonstration projects as well as co-operating with districts is always in the focus of the Municipality.
