In the EU, the main use of energy by households is for heating their homes, and is therefore highly contributing to greenhouse gas emissions
Today´s liberalised markets are focused on short-term return on capital, but energy infrastructure planning should be driven by the objective of climate protection.
District heating has proven to be a convenient and sustainable way to recover energy.
We reported from Sweden, Spain and Turkey showing new modern models of district heating, which recycle surplus heat from industrial plants that otherwise would be wasted, and use additionally renewable sources like biomass to heat homes.
European researchers tested these measures under the smart city project “Cityfied”.
