The innovative approachs, technical know-how and leadership across the CITyFiED community gained significant international recognition at the Euroheat & Power and International District Energy Association (IDEA) Global District Energy Climate Awards in Qatar, 24 October 2017

Veolia’s Torrelago demo site team took home the emerging market category prize, while Community of Interest city Tartu were also recognised for transforming their soviet-era district heating system into one of the world’s most innovative.

The Torrelago District Heating project in Laguna de Duero, Spain is central to the CITyFiED district renovation project with the heat network serving around 4000 residents due to be completed in 2018. The renovation includes installation of a 33 kWe/73.4 kWth micro-cogeneration system, smart control solutions and energy efficiency measures. The renovation is expected to reduce the district’s energy demand by 50 per cent.

Tartu, Estonia was one of the first cities to join CITyFiED’s board of representatives and has a long history of district heating excellence as well as a dynamic ‘Smart City Lab’. CITyFiED is delighted to see their work recognised, where they use a biomass- and peat-fuelled combined heat and power (CHP) plant and have installed automatic smart meter readers for 72 per cent of the city’s heat customers.
