European Energy Days inspire the next generation in Spain

In Laguna de Duero, Valladolid, Europe’s largest retrofit site is a massive undertaking designed to deliver significant energy savings and substantial reductions in CO2 emissions and improve comfort.

The CITyFiED project and local partners are focused on delivering the best technical solutions to achieve these targets, but also aware of the famous maxim ‘buildings don’t use energy, people do!’. So once again this year, the European Sustainable Energy Week was a welcome opportunity to engage, educate and even entertain residents and future generations on energy efficiency and sustainable technologies.

Veolia and architects 3IA invited groups of school children to visit and discover the CITyFiED project, the demonstration site, biomass boilers, insulation technologies and facades to support their schoolwork and inspire a new generation of energy conscious consumers. Video content, games and quiz questions made for a rewarding session, revealing CITyFiED partner Javier Martin and teams’ gift for bringing the issues to life. This included learning about the power of the “3R’s” of reduce, recycle and reuse as well as the large-scale benefits of district heating and insulation for all. Participating students, principally in the 10-11 year old academic year, will use the visit as learning material for their environmental syllabus over the weeks to come. Their support for energy efficiency will hopefully last a lifetime.
